Juan Gris
Overlooking the Bay (1921)
Tate

Juan Gris painted this when he was living at Bandol, a small port on the French Mediterranean coast. The painting is of objects in front of a window. The window looks out onto the harbour with its blue sea and hills in the distance.

Juan Gris was a cubist artist. Cubists used flat shapes and sometimes used collage in their paintings to suggest real objects. This makes things in cubist works look a little abstract. Can you tell what the objects in front of the window are?
