Ford Madox Brown
‘Take your Son, Sir’ (?1851–92)
Tate
This painting is slightly mysterious. It shows the artist’s wife, Emma, and their new-born son, Arthur Gabriel.
The way Emma is standing looks a little like the way Mary and the baby Jesus are often shown in paintings. But the decoration in the room makes it look like a modern room of the time. Also, the mother doesn't look very happy, so this isn't the usual celebration of being a new mum.
