She has also been called ‘the princess of polka dots’ because her work has one thing in common: dots!<o:p></o:p></p><p><o:p> </o:p></p><p>Some of her earliest paintings are about the horrors of war. In 1968, she wrote a letter to the President-to-be, Richard Nixon, saying: ‘Our earth is like one little polka dot among millions of other[s], one orb full of hatred... amid the peaceful, silent [ones]...’<o:p></o:p></p><p><o:p> </o:p></p><p>What would you write in a letter to your Prime Minister? <o:p></o:p></p></section><section><h3><h2><strong>You are Kara Walker! </strong></h2></h3><p></p><p>Kara Walker is an artist who isn’t afraid to talk about the horrible histories that have been hidden from us. Her work explores racial stereotypes and wrestles with how the past is remembered, and how it is forgotten at the same time.<o:p></o:p></p><p><o:p> </o:p></p><p>Kara Walker is well-known for her big cut paper silhouettes. A silhouette is an outline of a shape or figure in one colour - in this case, black, almost like shadows!<o:p></o:p></p><p><o:p> </o:p></p><p>This piece, <em>The Keys to the Coop</em>, is a large silhouette of a young girl and a chicken in a cartoon-like style. It can be seen as a comment on stereotypes associated with slavery and African-American history. Like silhouettes, stereotypes reduce the full complexity of human beings.<o:p></o:p></p></section><section><h3><h2><strong>You are the Guerrilla Girls!</strong></h2></h3><p></p><p>The Guerrilla Girls are an anonymous group of feminist artists who fight sexism in the art world and who use gorilla masks to protect their identities! <o:p></o:p></p><p><o:p> </o:p></p><p>But don’t worry, boys are allowed too. Like the Guerrilla Girls, you believe in gender equality and that both sexes should be equal.<o:p></o:p></p><p><o:p> </o:p></p><p><o:p>You might think we spelled Gorilla wrong, but Guerrilla Warfare means when smaller groups of people get together to fight bigger ones (sometimes whole armies!)</o:p></p><p><o:p> </o:p></p><p>The Guerrilla Girls used the language of advertising to get their messages across.
