After a ragingly successful tour of the festival circuit last year, which managed to include a giant collaborative watercolour painting and a heated debate with Gavin Turk at Camp Bestival, militant craft-making and take-away animal heads at Underage Festival, as well as a two-hour long performance at Latitude featuring porridge, balloons, paint buckets and confetti, The Great British Art Debate is excited to announce its return to the festival scene this summer.

At this year’s Camp Bestival, we will again be working with contemporary visual artists to bring you a range of amazing, creative projects from the gallery space to the field, and you’ll also get to see a unique preview of the forthcoming Collection display Family Matters, which will be shown at Tate Britain in October 2012. What’s happening at Camp Bestival?

A host of activities and discussions will be taking place, all inspired by this years festival question, ‘How can art represent today’s families in Britain?’

Contemporary artist Marysa Dowling will be popping up, camera in hand, inviting punters to partake in the festival-wide Family Portrait Photography Project. While assisting happy campers to create personal portraits, she’ll be sharing her artistic practice and creating a wider photographic display for the main stage visuals.

Or come to the East Lulworth Literary Institute to unleash your creativity at our artist-led intergenerational performance workshop, nothing but imagination or curiosity needed! Then join the conversation with Tate curators, artists, and special guests in the Great British Art Debate.

To be entered into our prize draw, show us what family means to you by uploading your drawings, illustrations, photographs or other visual ideas to The Great British Art Debate at Camp Bestival Flickr Group by 30th June 2012.  A selection of these images will be shown on the screen on the main stage in a very special Tate commissioned film!. The lucky prize winner will receive tickets to Camp Bestival 2013!

TERMS & CONDITIONS

To be entered into the prize draw, simply upload an image you think best describes your idea of what family means to you to The Great British Art Debate at Camp Bestival Flickr Group. Images should be a minimum of 300dpi and 1200×800 pixels. By entering this prize draw you consent to have your image displayed onsite at Camp Bestival, on the Great British Art Debate blog, and Tate website. The winner will be announced at Camp Bestival on Saturday 28 July 2012.

Last year nearly 600 children, young people and adults participated in our creative workshops, producing original watercolours with artist Neal Tait. Another 200 art enthusiasts took part in our debate in response to the Watercolour display and the curiously British pastime of watercolour painting. Take a look at last year’s festival highlights!
