From the entry
This section comprises a single sketchbook, previously associated with a tour of the English Midlands in 1830 (see the ‘Midlands 1830’ section of the present catalogue). Instead, as discussed in detail in the sketchbook’s introduction, it was probably first used in the summer of 1831, moving north along the Severn Valley between Worcester and Bridgnorth and at Chester and Manchester, as Turner travelled towards Scotland (see ‘Scotland 1831’); there are also views of Newcastle, probably made as he returned. The numerous studies around a concentrated area of the Derbyshire Peak District also recorded in the book suggest a visit on a separate occasion, perhaps later in 1831 or shortly afterwards.
