This study relates to Turner’s 1836 tour of the Alps, which he made in the company of the wealthy Scottish landowner H.A.J. Munro of Novar; for more information, see the Introduction to this section.
Turner’s first tour of the Alps in 1802 included many of the places he saw again in 1836 but, as the Turner scholar David Hill has noted, the lower part of the Aosta valley was new territory.1 The present sketch includes the church of L’Eglise on the right, with Quart Castle seen atop rocky slopes in the mid-ground.
