Made on the verso of Tate D34507 (Turner Bequest CCCXLIV 144), a study of the Castle of Sarre in Italy’s Val d’Aosta, the present pencil sketch was likely also made during Turner’s traverse of the valley.
Both studies relate to Turner’s 1836 tour of the Alps, which he made in the company of the wealthy Scottish landowner H.A.J. Munro of Novar; for more information, see the Introduction to this section.
