Turner made this sketch during his 1836 tour of the Alps, which he made in the company of the wealthy Scottish landowner, H.A.J. Munro of Novar; for more information about the tour, see the Introduction to this section.
This sketch, which looks towards Mont Blanc, was made from a viewpoint above the French village of Servoz. The Turner scholar David Hill noted that the view – which can still be reached by visiting the public footpath above Vieux Servoz – remains almost unchanged.1
