The subject of this sketch, first identified by the Turner scholar David Hill, is the Roman bridge at Pondel, which bridges the Cogne Valley and a dramatic gorge.1 Turner’s viewpoint looks towards the village, shown to the right of the bridge, and down the valley towards Aosta. He made other drawings of the bridge on large sheets of loose paper, including a pencil sketch that denotes the view from the other side (Tate D34895; Turner Bequest CCCXLIV 401) and two other views (Tate D34896 and D34916; Turner Bequest CCCXLIV 402 and 421).
The sketches relate to Turner’s 1836 tour of the Alps, made in the company of the wealthy Scottish landowner H.A.J. Munro of Novar; for more information, see the Introduction to this section.
