With the page turned horizontally, the view is south from the River Rhine to the spires of St Martin’s Basilica in Bingen, with the elevated ruins of Burg Klopp just upstream on the left. On the right, the mouth of the River Nahe is shown, with the ancient Roman Drususbrücke in the distance. Turner’s inscription, likely ‘Bingen’ or ‘Binger Lock’, refers to the narrow Binger Loch reach of the Rhine.
Compare the small sketch at the top of Tate D12833 (Turner Bequest CLX 68) in the 1817 Waterloo and Rhine sketchbook, others in the Brussels up to Mannheim – Rhine book, used on the outward leg of the present tour (D29740–D29741; CCXCVI 74, 74a), and the 1835 Prague, Nuremberg, Frankfurt and Rhine book (D30647; CCCIV 9). There are westward views from a little upstream on the recto (D32566) and folio 12 verso (D32565; CCCXXII 13a). Other views in the vicinity are noted under the latter, along with discussion of the subject’s context among the many rapid sketches made in this book while passing homeward down the familiar river.
