Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The upper view shows Vienna and the Danube valley from the Leopoldsberg. The river is marked at centre left ‘Dab’ and a vine-covered hill at left is marked ‘V’. Turner has inscribed ‘Dark but the Danube in Light’ above the view.
Below the Kahlenberg is shown at left, with St Josef’s monastery, and the Leopoldsberg and Leopoldskirche at right. ‘Closter’ is inscribed above St Josef’s.
