Kreuzenstein Castle is shown from a distance in the uppermost sketch, taken as Turner travelled down the Danube towards Vienna. ‘Mill’ is inscribed at right. The Stift Klosterneuberg, a twelfth-century Augustinian monastery, is depicted at left in the sketch below, with Klosterneuberg town and the Martinskirche at right. Orientated inversely, the sketch below that of Klosterneuberg shows a village on the Danube with a church at right. The sketch at rear shows the Leopoldsberg hill with the Church of St Leopold atop it. The Leopoldsberg is located on the outskirts of Vienna, approximately ‘4 miles’, as Turner inscribes, from the city centre.
