These six sketches showing the Danube at Dürnstein, Stein and Göttweig Abbey are all continued from the folio opposite (Tate D30283; Turner Bequest CCC 78a).
At top left is the continuation of a view of Dürnstein, with a squared-off sketch of a stormy sky to its right. Turner has jotted down a series of notes in the sky to describe colours: ‘Yel[low]’, ‘Or[ange] and Red’, ‘B’, ‘Purple Or’.
The view at centre shows ‘Stein’ (inscribed), with the Parish Church of St Nikolaus, the Frauenbergkirche, Minoritenkirche, the Piarist Church and Parish Church of St Vitus rendered from left to right (see Tate D30259, D30261; Turner Bequest CCC 65a, 66a). Göttweig Abbey is pictured to the top right of the view of Stein.
Below is a view of the Danube with Stein on the bank at left, the bridge at centre and Mautern on the opposite bank at right.‘Bridge 21’ is inscribed. The view at rear, rendered inversely relative to the sketches above it, shows the Danube with Dürnstein and its Abbey Church.
