These six sketches showing the Danube at Dürnstein, Stein and Göttweig Abbey all extend onto the folio opposite (Tate D30284; Turner Bequest CCC 79).
Dürnstein with the Castle and Abbey Church is shown in the uppermost sketch and squared off sketch to its bottom right (see also Tate D30281–D30282, D30284; Turner Bequest CCC 77a–78, 79. ‘Herstz’ is inscribed at top left. A view of Stein looking up the Danube is rendered at centre right, with a view of the Danube looking towards Stein and Mautern below it. Göttweig Abbey is pictured in the sketch inscribed ‘Danube’ (see Tate D30130, D30140, D30192; Turner Bequest CCC 1, 6, 32). The view at rear, rendered inversely relative to those above it, shows the Danube looking upstream towards Dürnstein and its Castle.
