This view was taken to the south of Salzburg, looking up the Salzach towards the Hoher Göll and the Untersberg mountains, seen at centre left and right. ‘[?Holnburg] G[?ully]’, probably an approximation of ‘Hoher Göll’, is inscribed at top centre, with ‘Timber’ inscribed at bottom centre. Machinery, possibly a river hoist, can be seen at the banks of the Salzach in the foreground at left. A boat filled with logs depicted on the folio opposite (Tate D30158; Turner Bequest CCC 15) is connected to this scene.
