From the opposite bank of the Salzach, Turner depicts the many churches and buildings of Salzburg’s old town. The Cathedral is visible at centre, with the towers of the old Rathaus and St Michael’s Church towards the foreground at centre-right. What appears to be the dome of the Collegiate Church can be seen at right, with Mönchsberg hill continued in the sky above. ‘Salzburg’ is inscribed at centre below the Cathedral, while ‘Bells’ and a diagonal line directed to one of the Cathedral’s towers is inscribed at top centre towards right. ‘Red’ is inscribed directly beneath it.
