These sketches show figures and boats on the Danube around Krems, Austria (see also Tate D41223 and Tate D30130; Turner Bequest CCC 1). Turner depicts riverboats loaded with cargo, two soldiers, a man in a top hat, and the steep banks of a river. Below one of the boats Turner has inscribed ‘Method of loading Wine Casks’ and around the soldiers he has inscribed ‘Red Collar | Cuff of the | same [...] | Blue’, ‘Blue’ | ‘Austrians’. A larger boat is depicted parallel to the gutter of the sketchbook.
