The uppermost sketch shows the harbour of Ostend, where Turner docked at the beginning of his 1833 tour. Ostend pier is depicted on the folio opposite (Tate D29599; Turner Bequest CCXCVI 3).
The remaining sketches were taken on the Rhine and show Bingen, the Mäuseturm and Burg Ehrenfels. Turner has inscribed ‘Bingen Custom House’ (the Mäuseturm) at right. Bingen and the Burg Ehrenfels are recorded in other sketchbooks throughout the Bequest, such as the Waterloo and Rhine and Rhine sketchbooks of 1817 (see Tate D12833, D12835, D12944–D12949; Turner Bequest CLX 68, 69, CLXI 33a–36).
