The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally. As Cecilia Powell recognised,1 the view is west from the direction of Schulerstrasse, now largely lined with later buildings, towards Vienna’s St Stephen’s Cathedral, with its spire and domed tower marking the transepts south and north of the nave respectively. Technical notes:
There is staining towards the top left and right from the leather pencil loops secured under the front paste-down (D41222).
