Joseph Mallord William Turner Hilly Landscapes with Buildings, ?between Graz and Vienna 1840

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 3 Verso:
Hilly Landscapes with Buildings, ?between Graz and Vienna 1840
D30007
Turner Bequest CCXCIX 3a
Pencil on cream wove paper, 127 x 198 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘W[...]’ and ‘W[...]’ towards top left, ascending vertically, and ‘[... ?G and V]’ with ‘x’ above top right

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
With the page turned both horizontally and vertically, there are three swift drawings of hills, possibly with fortifications on their skylines. The two notes beginning with ‘W’ beside the smaller views remain to be deciphered.
The apparent note of ‘G and V’ above the main view likely indicate Graz, and Vienna to its north-east (see respectively under folios 41 verso and 40 recto; D30079, D30076), both on Turner’s route, suggesting that it at least was drawn on that leg of the tour.
Technical notes:
There is staining towards the top left and right from the leather pencil loops secured under the front paste-down (D41222).
