Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Inside Back Cover:
A Band of Colour Wash 1840
D41534
Watercolour on white wove paper, 220 x 320 mm
Inscribed on printed label ‘ROBERSON & MILLER, | 51, Long Acre, | LONDON.’ bottom right, upside down
Inscribed in pencil by ?John Ruskin ‘J R 4[?6]’ and ‘[?a/p]’ towards bottom right, upside down
Along the bottom edge towards the right is a 4 mm band of grey watercolour wash, inadvertently carried over from the water in the foreground of one of the Venice subjects formerly bound in the sketchbook (see the Introduction).
Technical notes:
This is the only instance in the Turner Bequest of a Roberson and Miller suppliers’ label (see the technical notes in the sketchbook’s Introduction).
A small, irregular brown mark at the foot of the gutter appears to be a stain rather than watercolour, and continues inside the front cover (D41533). There are other speckled marks and minor stains. The continuous white paper paste-downs are laminated to the sketchbook’s marbled paper outer covers, which lack any drawings or inscriptions by Turner and are thus without Tate accession numbers. D41533 is watermarked ‘J Whatman | 1834’.
