Drawn with the page turned horizontally, like the compressed view on the recto (D31803) the two views here show the waterfront on the north side of the Bacino from off the Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore. At the top is a panorama ranging west on the left to the Dogana and the domes of Santa Maria della Salute beyond the masts of moored shipping on the left, across the entrance to the Grand Canal and forward to the blank mass of the Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace), with the lower New Prisons and what appears to be a loose indication of the windows of the Hotel Danieli (Palazzo Dandolo) on the right to the north.
Below is a more detailed rendering of some of the buildings on the right, showing details of the east side of the Doge’s Palace overlooking the Rio di Palazzo beyond the Ponte della Paglia, with the elevated Bridge of Sighs linking it to the New Prisons on the right; compare the upper sketch on folio 45 verso (D31879).
