With the pages turned horizontally, folios 5 verso, 6 recto and 6 verso (D32272–D32274) show aspects of the south-eastern end of the pilgrimage church at Burg Hohenbregenz on its dramatic rocky crag (since softened by trees) on the Gebhardsberg mountain south of Bregenz. In the main view here the curve of the Bregenz shore of Lake Constance (the Bodensee) is seen far below. At the top left and bottom right are thumbnail sketches of related views; framed by pencil lines and slight but evocative, the second indicates the setting ‘sun’ turning the lake ‘red’.
See under folio 2 verso (D32266) for Bregenz views on adjacent pages and four related watercolours on blue paper.1 The drawings on folios 4 recto–6 verso (D32269–D32274) are all from Gebhardsberg viewpoints.
