The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally. In the first of a short sequence of views on the Canale della Giudecca (folios 6 verso–9 recto; D31288–D31293),1 the viewpoint is around its western end, with the campanile of San Nicolò dei Mendicoli near the waterfront on the left. The tower is now obscured from this angle by one of the various later dockyard buildings in this peripheral area of Venice. Beyond, to the north-east, are the twin domes of the campanili of the Angelo Raffaele church (see the recto; D31287), and further east, right of centre, what seems to be the campanile of the Ognissanti, with the domes of Santa Maria della Salute and the Gesuati beyond. Furthest right is the dome of the Zitelle, to the east-south-east near the far end of the Isola della Giudecca on the south side of the canal; compare a waterfront study in the contemporary Venice and Botzen sketchbook (Tate D31853; Turner Bequest CCCXIII 32a).
As noted in the sketchbook’s Introduction, the Venice views on its early pages are intermingled with German sketches from Turner’s return journey.
