D40110
Gouache and pencil on blue paper, 143 x 194 mm

Inscribed in pencil ‘CCLIX.114’ and ‘b’ at centre, and ‘14’ towards bottom centre
Stamped in black with Turner Bequest monogram over ‘CCLIX – 114’ below centre
This is the verso of View on the Seine between Mantes and Vernon (Rolleboise on the Road from Bonnieres), a Wanderings by the Seine subject (D24679; Turner Bequest CCLIX 114). Turner’s gouache inscriptions on the backs of the series are not recorded in Finberg’s 1909 Inventory.1 ‘Beaupiare’ is likely to be his mistaken recollection of the name Bonnières.
Technical notes
There is staining at the bottom left, and there are slight pencil marks towards the bottom right.
