The sketch orientated horizontally is part of a panoramic view of Rotterdam continued from the folio opposite (Tate D32448; Turner Bequest CCCXXI 3). It shows the backs of houses in Toerijstuin, overlooking Kolk harbour.
The other sketch, rendered in accordance with the foliation, is a rough view of the Kolk, with St Lawrence’s tower outlined. The cross is shorthand for a windmill. Turner has inscribed a note at bottom left which may read ‘Canal’.
