The principal sketch is of Hamburg, taken from the south end of the Holzbrücke and looking towards St Nicholas’ Church (Nikolaikirche). A group of figures can be seen in the foreground at left. Parallel to the gutter of the sketchbook Turner has rendered a cursory view of Copenhagen from Øresund Strait.
