This is a sketch of Kiel, a port city on the Baltic Sea in northern Germany. Turner depicts the castle (schloss), dating to 1230, and St Nicholas’ Church (Nikolaikirche).1 The artist was in Kiel before travelling to Copenhagen on 6 September 1835.2 See also Tate D30840–D30841; Turner Bequest CCCV 10a–11.
