These sketches show coastline or islands in Denmark. Over four hundred islands comprise the Danish archipelago, some of which Turner would have seen as he sailed from Kiel in Germany to Copenhagen. The artist has inscribed the numbers ‘1’, ‘2’, ‘3’ at right, possibly to show that these three sketches are parts of one whole view or to describe a sequence of views.
