These sketches show coastline or islands in Denmark. Over four hundred islands comprise the Danish archipelago, some of which Turner would have seen as he sailed from Kiel in Germany to Copenhagen. The building at top right is inscribed with what appears to read ‘[?Steerborg Kirke]’. This may refer to the church at Stege, the largest town on the Island of Møn in south-eastern Denmark (see Tate D30834; Turner Bequest CCCV 7a).
