Here Turner depicts two towns on the Rhine in Germany, each sketch rendered inversely to one another. Bingen is marked out by a large gothic church and Burg Klopp, a ruined medieval stronghold which can be seen in the distance atop a mount. The second town, with a twin towered building, is unidentified, but is shown again on the folio opposite (Tate D30646; Turner Bequest CCCIV 8a).
