This is a view of the Rhine from Bingen on the left bank to Burg Ehrenfels on the right. Bingen can be seen at centre, marked out by the spires of its church, along with Burg Klopp atop the hill. On a small river island at far right is the Mäuseturm. Burg Ehrenfels and the right bank of the Rhine are depicted above, parallel to the gutter of the sketchbook.
Castles Klopp and Ehrenfels, together with the Mäuseturm, were built in the thirteenth century by the Archbishopric of Mainz to exact taxes from passing river traffic. See also Tate D30644, D30646–D30651; Turner Bequest CCCIV 7a, 8a–11.
