These sketches show a stretch of the River Rhine around Bingen and Rüdesheim. Both towns are depicted in the uppermost sketch, the Burg Klopp visible atop a hill at left overlooking Bingen, while Rüdesheim is seen on the right bank. In the centre of the river is the Mäuseturm, an ancient tower first built by the Romans to defend the Rhine from attack and later used as customs collection point and signal tower.
Rüdesheim is shown again in the view at rear, with its parish church and the Castles Boosenburg and Brömserburg at centre. See also Tate D30645–D30651; Turner Bequest CCCIV 8–11.
