These are studies of St James’ Church at Stettin (now Szczecin in Poland), produced with the sketchbook turned upside down. The inscriptions ‘W’, ‘W’, ‘2’, ‘3’, ‘2’, ‘2’ annotate one of the studies. Turner has also inscribed ‘St Peter’ at centre right, referring to the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Stettin (not depicted here). At the upper most register is a continuation of a sketch of Stettin from the folio opposite (Tate D31092; Turner Bequest CCCVII 37).
For other sketches of Stettin see Tate D31083–D31093, D31095–D31106; Turner Bequest CCCVII 32a–37a, 38a–44.
