Here Turner depicts a view of Berlin from the University, looking across the Opernplatz to the Opera House, the French Cathedral, Neue Kirche, and the Old Royal Library on Bebelplatz. The Library, rendered at right in more detail, grew from the collection of Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg (1620–88) and his son Frederick I, the first King of Prussia (1657–1713).
For other sketches of Berlin see Tate D21045–D31082; Turner Bequest CCCVII 13a–32.
