The principal view depicts Dresden’s Neustädter Markt. At right Turner has rendered the equestrian statue of Augustus the Strong (1670–1733), Elector of Saxony. Just beyond the statue is the Blockhaus, an old customs house which vetted goods coming into the city via the Augustus Bridge.
The squared-off sketch of river scenery is presumably the Elbe at Dresden. For more sketches of the city see Tate D30296–D30303, D30896–D30900, D31024–D31042; Turner Bequest CCCI 1–7, CCCVI 6a–9, CCCVII 3–12.
