These sketches of figures and landscapes are rough copies of four paintings Turner saw in the Dresden Picture Gallery (Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister). The paintings are: Claude Lorrain (1600–82) Landscape with the Flight into Egypt (1647) and Landscape with Acis and Galatea (1657), Jacob Adriaensz Backer (1608–51) David Giving Uriah the Letter (1650), and Jacob Isaacksz van Ruisdael (1628–82), The Hunt (1665–70). The artist has also inscribed brief colour notes ‘D Red’, ‘[...]’, ‘Yell[ow]’, ‘Grey’, ‘Bright Lights’ and ‘Rysdael’ in and around the sketches.
