Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the rapid main sketch shows clouds over the sea or a low coastal horizon. See the sketchbook’s Introduction for the many slight coastal views and studies of clouds and the sun over the sea scattered through it.
At the right is a very slight landscape, apparently made with the page turned vertically and consisting of a few horizontal lines evoking the sea or a coastline, with a mark or brief inscription in the sky. Compare the equally slight studies on folio 10 recto opposite (D35505).
