This study of the John Dryden monument in Westminster Abbey is one of several drawings of the church in this volume. For more information on these, see the sketchbook introduction. At various points on the page, Turner has transcribed the inscription on the Dryden monument. These notes read, ‘J. DRYDEN ¦NATUS 1672 MORTUUS Maij 1, 1700’. Also transcribed are the inscriptions on the monument upon which Dryden’s sits to John Sheffield, Duke of Buckingham. These read ‘Johannes Sheffield DUX BUC ¦KINGHAMIENSIS POSUIT 1720’.
