Apparently derived from a drawing in the 1798 Hereford Court sketchbook (Tate D01352; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 98), this large study is a preparatory essay for the watercolour known as Cader Idris,1 of which there is a second version.2 Both study and finished works may date from slightly earlier than 1799, and this sheet, with its bold stopping- and lifting-out and layering of soft transparent colours, can be grouped with a Dolbadarn Castle study (Tate D04166; Turner Bequest LXX O) and another of Moel Hebog from above Llyn Dinas (Tate D01115; Turner Bequest XXXVI U).
