Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 8 Recto:
Figures on a Field with Woods and Hills Beyond, with Mountains Rising into Clouds Above 1801
D03291
Turner Bequest LVII 8
Gouache with scraping–out on grey–buff ground, 149 x 118 mm
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘8’ bottom right
Stamped in black ‘LVII – 8’ bottom right

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
For the general setting, see under folio 4 verso (D03284). This is perhaps a variant of the composition on folio 7 verso opposite (D03290), but possibly, as Finberg suggests, a continuation of it,1 although such an interpretation is contradicted by the upright format of a related ‘Scottish Pencil’ drawing (Tate D03430; Turner Bequest LVIII 51).
