Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 56 Verso:
Tantallon Castle from the West 1801
D02693
Turner Bequest LIV 56a

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the subject is continued on folio 57 recto opposite (D02694). This is one of a series of views of Tantallon continuing to folio 60 recto (D02700). The castle was built in the mid-fourteenth century by the Douglas Earls of Angus; like its neighbour a little farther along the Berwickshire coast, Dunbar and Dirleton (see folios 51 recto–52 verso; D02682–D02685), it was reduced to ruins by Cromwell’s army in 1651.
