With the page turned horizontally, showing a more distant view from the same direction as that on folio 6 recto (D02469), this is one of three views of Whitby taken from similar viewpoints in the Inner Harbour; see also folio 8 recto (D02471). Gerald Wilkinson thought that the style of this drawing was consistent with its (and the rest of the sketchbook’s) having been executed on Turner’s previous visit to the north–east, in 1797.1
