Disrupted by the removal of a large proportion of the sheet, making the drawing’s orientation uncertain, this is perhaps a study for the painting Jason, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1802 (Tate N00471;1 see folio 4 recto; D04908; Turner Bequest LXXXI 7), the Holy Family, exhibited at the Academy in 1803 (Tate N00473;2 see folios 31 verso–33 recto; D04962–D04965; Turner Bequest LXXXI 60–63), or alternatively for one of the projected ‘Adonis’ subjects (see folios 23 verso–27 verso; D04946–D04954; Turner Bequest LXXXI 44–52).
