With the sketchbook turned vertically, Turner sketched several small views of Castle Cornet in St Peters Port, Guernsey on this page. The top of the page records the castle within its harbour setting in three horizontal strips; the central passage features two further overlapping sketches, possibly of the same feature. For the key entry on this medieval fortress, see folio 29 verso (D23575; Turner Bequest CCLII 29a). Below these, at the centre of the page, are two cursory sketches of a coastal land-mass on the horizon, identified by Turner’s pencil note between the two as Sark Island seen from the south-east.
Technical notes:
The bottom of the page is marked with grey watercolour, carried over or transferred from folio 2 recto opposite (D23527; Turner Bequest CCLII 2).
