Warwick Castle 1798
D00329
Turner Bequest XXI C
Pencil and watercolour with stopping-out on white wove paper, 299 x 402 mm
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Based on the pencil study of 1794 (Tate D00328; Turner Bequest XXI B), this is an unfinished watercolour perhaps intended as a companion for a finished view of Pembroke Castle (Tate D01877; Turner Bequest XLIV A). Finberg refers to another contemporary view of Warwick Castle1 (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester)2 Like other drawings in the present group it exemplifies Turner’s new interest in the stopping-out process at this date.
