The men taking their ease in this drawing, made with the page turned horizontally, and that on D02197 (Turner Bequest XLVII 20) are presumably workmen engaged on the building of William Beckford’s massive Gothic folly at Fonthill.
Technical notes:
The use of black chalk here is somewhat unexpected; it recurs in drawings on D02192 and D02194; Turner Bequest XLVII 15, 17). For a proposed sequence for the leaves of the disbound Fonthill sketchbook, with this page as folio 7, see the Introduction.
