Although Finberg suggests ‘Powis Castle, near Welshpool’,1 this drawing certainly depicts Wenvoe Castle, south of Cardiff. The house was designed by Robert Adam for Peter Birt and built, perhaps by Henry Holland, about 1780. Turner has made a slight study of architectural detail, perhaps relating to a building in the park, in the blank space at the upper right. There is no evidence that he had received a commission to paint a ‘portrait’ of the house.
