The location of this subject is uncertain. Like D01648 (Turner Bequest XLI 18a), the drawing does not seem to relate to St Donat’s (see the rectos of that sheet and the present one; D01647, D01649; Turner Bequest XLI 18, 19), but may show a scene on the Wye. Alternatively, it was perhaps noted on the river Teifi near Cilgerran; see the contemporary Hereford Court sketchbook (Tate D01279; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 28). At any rate, it was clearly of interest to Turner on account of the industrial activity associated with the kiln or forge he shows, and he has jotted down notes of the workers he saw there.
