Finberg listed this subject, clearly erroneously, as ‘Caerphilly Castle (?)’;1 Castell y Fan, in the Brecon Beacons, has also been suggested. The castle depicted has several features in common with that in a drawing in the contemporary Dynevor Castle sketchbook (Tate D01538; Turner Bequest XL 45).
